Teaching under the big tent in San Antonio de Flores, Honduras. I was blessed to be invited out by the Hanold/Woods team to share in one of the night tent services. Here is what I shared with them and it bears repeating.
Q: WHAT ARE SOME OF THE NAMES GIVEN TO THE HOLY SPIRIT?
A: 1John 3:23-24(simply "Spirit"); Ephesians 1:13-14("Holy Spirit"); John 16:13-15("Spirit of truth");
John 15:26("Counselor" and "Spirit of truth")
Q1: DO WE BELIEVE GOD GIVES US THE HOLY SPIRIT TO LIVE WITHIN US?
A1: 1John 3:23-24 And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. All who keep his commandments abide in him, and he in them. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit which he has given us.
Q2: WHEN IS THE HOLY SPIRIT GIVEN?
A2: Ephesians 1:13-14 In him you also, who have heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and have believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, which is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
Q3: WHY IS THE HOLY SPIRIT GIVEN?
A3: John 16:13-15 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
Q4: WHAT IS THE FIRST QUESTION WE SHOULD BE ASKING THE HOLY SPIRIT WHEN WE ARE SEEKING TRUTH?
The reason I say this is the first question to ask is because the answer to this question is foundational to who we are and in what condition we are. ALSO, the reason I say the Holy Spirit is the only one who can be trusted to give the answer is because of what we already read and discussed in QA2 - Ephesians 1: 14 "the promised Holy Spirit is the guarantee". I have asked this same question for my own life over and over... many times. I usually ask this question in times of doubt or difficulty - both of these are guaranteed to come into your life too. At one point of my life I was deceived into believing an answer to this question that did not come from the Holy Spirit but instead came from the Deceiver - Lucifer.
The answer the Holy Spirit gives to this question is always immediate and true. It is an unconditional "yes of no" answer... as clear and different as the color black is from white.
There are many words that can be used to ask this question; all basically mean the same thing - "Am I saved?" - "Do I belong to You?" - "Am I in your family?"
A4: John 15:26 But when the Counselor comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness to me;
Q5: WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?
Depending on the answer received from the last question - "Am I saved?" - we have our direction for all the rest of the questions we should be asking.
- If the answer the Holy Spirit gives is YES "Ask what you need too in accordance with the will of God and He Will Answer you."
A5a: Romans 8:25-28 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. ¶ Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with sighs too deep for words. And he who searches the hearts of men knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. We know that in everything God works for good with those who love him, who are called according to his purpose.
- If NO was the answer given by the Holy Spirit it should be clear to you your need of repentance and salvation.
A5b: The Door(John 10:1-15); The Vine(John 15:1-8); Jesus is the reason for salvation - He is worthy.
SALVATION: Romans 10
